ONLINE WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Jumpstart Your Personal Statement Workshop
The first hour students will learn the features and goals of an effective college application essay. Then I walk them through a series of interactive brainstorming exercises to find a hot topic for their “core,” personal statement essay (typically used for their Common App or Coalition App essay requirement)
During the second hour, I lead students through timed writing exercises that will help them generate a first rough draft. I also teach them how to tell their mini real-life stories (a writing technique called anecdotes) to power their slice-of-life essays.
+Students who want to stay past noon are welcome to ask questions and receive feedback from me on their topic ideas and other concerns.
Jumpstart Your University of California Essays & Supps
The first hour I review the UC’s Personal Insight Questions and guide students on how to leverage them to best showcase their strengths, achievements, personality and character. I share sample outlines to help them structure their work to engage the admissions officers and bring meaning and depth to their short essays.
During the second hour, I will review some of the most common supplemental essays students will need to write for individual colleges and universities, and provide tips and advice to bring them to life.
