As the parent of a high school overachiever, thoughts of college (and nightmares about tuition and debt) have started creeping into more and more of our days and nights. It's the Student, Not the College does a fantastic job of helping teenagers and parents adjust their thinking about this rite of passage, debunking the myths about the race to get into the most selective schools with solid research and grounded advice.

White establishes that Ivy League acceptance is no magical ticket to some nirvana of six figure salaries and caviar parties. The first section of the book helps parents and kids understand that how the student prepares for college is far more important than the name of the school that ends up on a resumé. Understanding this--possibly earth-shattering--fact helps prepare students for the practical, point-by-point guide that makes up the heart of It's the Student, Not the College: how to build a success profile.

This success profile is less a map to traversing the college entrance minefield, and more a total guide to building a student's academic and professional identity. It's the Student, Not the College provides innumerable insights into both what colleges look for and how students can reshape their habits and goals to make the most out of high school, college, and even early career moves.

Kristin White has written a wonderful book on how to select a college that matches your goals, personality: how to find the perfect fit. And, Ms. White describes the attitudes and learning style that will ensure success at any college, and in life after college.

There is a myth, exploited by many expensive private college admissions counselors, that there are only about 20 colleges in America worth attending, and a young person's life is ruined if they do not attend one of those 20 colleges. In fact, America has hundreds of high quality colleges, and a student who works hard at any of them will be successful in their chosen field.

I wish every 9th grader in America and their parents would read this book and take it to heart. The students who DO read this book and use the attitudes and techniques Ms. White describes will do well in high school and do well in college and in life.

This book is a practical, smooth read with a compelling argument that "fit" (in more ways than one) overrides the current mania for elitism brand name higher education. The author points to the soaring cost of the Ivies+ which tells how much our social fabric is valuing those credentials. But do they translate to success? Happiness? Surely right now the numbers show that demand is outstripping supply. I found this insider look into the process insightful.

Better than the hard cover that just showed up on the Times bestsellers list from an accomplished and experienced author. Save your money on that book and, more importantly, on the biggest decision of your son/daughter's life.

Been through it twice (getting kids into colleges). Wish I had this resource then.
